DAY 5 And I'm Still ALIVE!

Day 5 of National Say no to Lies Week, and it has been easier than I thought it would be. I put all of my favorite internet bookmarks into a folder marked "Gossip", so accessing them would take a consious decision to engage with gossip. That made it really easy.

Not that I haven't come close to making a mistake or two. Just a moment ago I clicked on a Refdesk headline "Jane Fonda Uses Vulgar Slang on `Today'", but before it loaded I remembered what week it is, and I was able to save myself just in the nick of time.

I have absolutely no idea what Brittany is doing. Or LaLohan. Price William could be dating George Michael, for all I know. (Though I think Myfanwe might have mentioned something, if that were the case.) There were pop-culture jokes last night on leno that I didn't understand.

IN OTHER NEWS

Myfanwe and I are getting ready to re-do our kitchen. We've met with a couple of contractors. We have the money in place. We have very similar tastes. We both agree that utilitarian kitchens are better than showy kitchens.

And yet there is one obstacle that may be too high for us to surmount. Flooring.

Yes, I like interlocking linoleum, but I heard from one contractor that he doesn't like it in the kitchen because of water. Myfanwe wants rubber flooring -- which I love -- but she wants it for $5 a square foot, and she isn't going to get that. Anywhere. I thought that ceramic tile seemed like a logic product, since it is economical, durable, easy to clean, etc. Myfanwe is now trying to convince me that she recently developed an intense allergy to ceramic tile that may prove life threatening. I don't want wood because a) our upstairs neighbors have flooded us on occasion and b) I drop things...like knives...and I have never seen hardwood that really resisted scratches.

And apparently they can put in anything without a floor. Every room is supposed to have one.

I have ceramic tile and the week after I it was put in - I dropped a glass jar.... It was spectacular and the sound that the jar made when it hit the tile and exploded in a cajillion pieces still haunts me. I have a friend who put in cork and it's very very nice. No floor is happy when a knife hits it.

I would love cork -- I very much like the look and feel of it. But we have a kitty who has all of her fingers and toes...and their resulting claws. I want a floor that will last for 30 years.

Oh, what am I going to do?

Ceramic tiles - easy to keep clean. You can put in a loose rug or two especially where you sit or stand a lot or how about cork mats instead of loose rugs.

I have a utilitarian kitchen and have a tile floor with rugs in front of the counters, fridge and sink. The tile is easy to clean and extremely durable while the rugs assist in keeping every dish and glass dropped from exploding into a million projectiles.

With 3 kids still at home and two dogs my kitchen is NOT showy, it's very workhorse and homey. The floor is #2 grade oak (which we put in ourselves when we built the place 15 years ago). The floor has held up quite nicely (and we're a family of droppers). We're planning on replacing the carpet in our living room with flooring and the husband has been visiting a flooring liquidator place to check on prices. You may see what is available in your area as you could find something you like at a more reasonable price than other places.

Personally, I'd like a self cleaning floor. Let me know if you come across one.

I can't tell you how much we love our cork floor in the kitchen. Soft underfoot, doesn't show every speck of dirt, easy to clean, and very forgiving when you drop things - even knives (it self-heals). No problem with our very rambunctious cat, either - seriously, wherever you got your info that cats and cork don't mix, I promise from experience it's wrong.

I can't remember how much it was but it was less than $5 psf for sure. We bought it in long boards, like a wood-wood floor, and so it doesn't look "cork tile-y" either. Good luck! Kitchen reno is fun, fun, fun.

No floor will look new for 30 years.
Tile involves grout, which gets dirty no matter what you do. Tile will chip and break if something heavy or hard enough is dropped on it. "Modern" materials including linoleum-equivalents (real lino is rare these days) will have the surface wear off and dirt will grind into the pores, but I've never heard of their having a problem with water. Wood has the advantage that it can be refinished to look like new; the others can't be. Wood also makes a good base if you decide to put another material down later.
